Waste Watch
In Cebu City’s ever-churning urban rhythm, a quiet movement is reshaping how communities engage with plastic waste.
Project Waste Watch, led by JCI Cebu in partnership with the Cebu City LGU, local communities, and Cebu Technological University, empowers citizens not just to clean, but to observe, document, and drive change. Focused on Budlaan River and Mambaling Coastal Area, the project maps plastic pollution through citizen science—contributing localized data to PlastELEK, a nationwide initiative led by University of the Philippines – MSI.
Though election-related plastics were a timely lens, the findings revealed a broader reality: a flood of everyday plastics overwhelming our waterways and coastlines. More than a data-gathering mission, Waste Watch sparks civic consciousness—bridging science, policy, and community action.
This is sustainability at its most human: grounded, participatory, and built for impact. In a city growing fast, Waste Watch offers a model that listens, learns, and leads.
