In a powerful collaboration between JCI Cebu and JCI Japan, a Garbage Sorting Seminar and House-to-House Campaign officially launched on May 18 at the Barangay Luz, Cebu City.

The event marked the start of a three-month pilot program focused on improving waste segregation at the household level, aiming to reduce landfill waste and convert recyclables into fluff fuel, a clean energy source processed by SM Guun.

City officials and JCI leaders showed strong support. Among those present were Vice Mayor Hon. Dondon Hontiveros, Vice Mayor-Elect Hon. Tommy Osmeña, RVP Deb Ucang, and National Director Richard Lim.

From JCI Japan, Vice President Keita Sugawara, Chairperson Wataru Oizumi, and Ambassador of Smile by Action Fumiya Sankai participated and inspired residents to adopt sustainable habits.

JCI Cebu VP for Community Development Nel Luceno led the project overview, followed by training sessions from Gabay graduate Sean Domingo and SM Guun’s Prettie Acop-Jalang.

Support also came from CCENRO, Barangay Luz LGU, and the Sangguniang Kabataan, led by SK Chairman Yons Roble, who mobilized youth involvement.

Eco-warriors were trained to lead Monday mini-seminars in preparation for Tuesday collection days, running from June 3 to August 26.

If successful, the program will expand to nine more barangays, with plans to scale citywide, proving that sustainable change begins at the household level.
