In a bid to promote sustainable waste management, JCI Japan’s Sustainable International Development Commission has teamed up with JCI Cebu to launch a long-term waste segregation initiative. The project, led by JCI Cebu’s 2025 External Development Team, seeks to instill proper waste disposal habits among local communities.
The initiative officially commenced with an initial partnership meeting on February 20, bringing together representatives from Barangay Luz, Solid Waste Management, the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), PHINLA, and SM Guun Environmental Company. Discussions centered on sustainable waste management solutions, followed by a cleanup drive at Barangay Luz National High School, engaging students and faculty members in promoting environmental responsibility.
On February 21, the delegation visited ARN Primewaste in Barangay Binaliw to observe the city’s landfill processes. The visit provided key insights that were later shared with representatives from Cebu City’s 80 barangays in a formal presentation of the sustainability project.
Leading the initiative were Oizumi Wataru, National Chair of JCI Japan’s Sustainable International Development Commission, and Nel Luceno, JCI Cebu’s Vice President for Community Development. The project features seminars, caravans, and house-to-house campaigns from May to August, designed to educate residents on proper waste segregation and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Boosting the campaign’s momentum, Filipino-Japanese influencer Fumiya will join the awareness drive, expanding its reach, increasing public engagement, and encouraging greater participation in sustainable waste management efforts.
This partnership marks a significant step in reducing waste, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering environmental awareness in Cebu City. Through collaboration, JCI Japan and JCI Cebu are working toward long-term solutions for a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
